Lilly partner at local, national and global level for World Diabetes Day
Last night in London, UK (November 12) Lilly supported the hosting of the UK premiere of the Life for a Child documentary film. The well-attended event brought together key diabetes stakeholders such as IDF, Diabetes UK and JDRF to share information with the invited guests. An auction after the film raised funds for the International Diabetes Federation’s Life for a Child Program. At the event, Lilly announced the donation of £15,000 to the Program. This money was donated by Lilly on behalf of all the people who had entered works of artistic expression into the 2007-2008 Inspired by Diabetes competition.
Lilly continues its support for World Diabetes Day with a variety of activities around the world, including the global launch of the 2008-2009 Inspired by Diabetes campaign, a collaboration among Lilly, the International diabetes Federation and the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes.
Other activities are focused on partnering with national diabetes organizations to raise awareness of diabetes issues in individual countries. The activities include countries large and small, including:
In the U.S., Lilly is joining a cable TV network to raise awareness of diabetes in the African-American community, featuring Grammy-nominated singer Angie Stone, ambassador for Lilly's "F.A.C.E. Diabetes (Fearless African Americans Connected and Empowered) education initiative.
- Lilly Canada will participate in the Canadian Diabetes Association's Clothesline Campaign, a clothing and household-item collection program. The collected goods are sold, with proceeds benefiting diabetes research, education, and advocacy.
- Lilly Netherlands is partnering with the National Diabetes Foundation and the city councils of Rotterdam, The Hague, and Amsterdam to launch the "Diabetes Screening Bus." On World Diabetes Day, the bus will travel to economically depressed areas with a diabetes nurse, general practitioner, and three interpreters (Arabic, Turkish, and Hindi) onboard to help screen potential diabetes patients.
- Lilly Poland and the Polish Diabetology Society organized a press conference on the Polish and Pan-European perspectives of combating diabetes. Conducted in Warsaw earlier this month, the event featured a panel of Polish and international diabetology experts, as well as a Polish Olympian and diabetes advocate. The program also promoted Lilly Poland's Lilly Diabetes Education Centers and the IDF/Lilly BRIDGES program. Lilly Poland also is sponsoring a newspaper supplement focusing on the diabetes epidemic, which will be published on World Diabetes Day in the country's national daily newspaper.
- Lilly Portugal is working with the National Patients Association and the Portuguese Diabetes Society to organize two diabetes screening sites, and will launch the programs Diabetes Conversations and Inspired by Diabetes.
