In Egypt, the well-known Bibliotheca Alexandrina (or Library of Alexandria) is the latest building to sign up to the World Diabetes Day Monument Challenge, and light up in blue on World Diabetes Day - 14 November. Officially opened in 2002, the Bibliotheca is a major library (that can house up to 8 million books) and cultural centre that was built to commemorate the Royal Library of Alexandria, which was destroyed in ancient times.
