Ancient landmark to light in blue again for World Diabetes Day

Citadel of AleppoThe Citadel of Aleppo will once again be participating in the Monument Challenge on World Diabetes Day, November 14.

Located in Aleppo, Syrian Arab Republic, the Citadel was built in the ninth century BC by the first Hamdanid ruler of Aleppo, as a fortress for the city. The Citadel underwent major renovation in the twelfth century AD, and the structure remains very similar today. A mosque was built within the Citadel in the thirteenth century.

The Citadel surrounds the city of Aleppo, which lies fifty meters below it. With towers, domes, and high walls, the Citadel has become the symbol for the city.

This historical landmark joins the current list of 80 monuments that will light up in blue on November 14 to celebrate World Diabetes Day and help raise awareness of diabetes. View the full list.
