Diabetes on the rise in children; lifestyles to blame

Meanwhile, Pakistan Nutrition and Dietetic Society (PNDS) arranged a ‘Continuing Nutrition Education' seminar for health care professionals. The purpose of the seminar was to commemorate World Diabetes Day.
Speakers Ms Nilofer F Safdar , Dr Ghazala Rafique, Dr Saima Rasheed, Asma Yawar, Dr Mehwish Riaz, Aiza Shoaib and others expressed concern over lack of emphasis placed on the role of diet and nutrition education in the effective management of diabetes.
They said that diabetes in children can affect normal development. Type 1 diabetes is the most common in children and adolescents right now, while Type 2 diabetes is on the rise in this group due to obesity.
