KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 14 (Bernama) -- Today being World Diabetes Day, Malaysians should take a step back and evaluate their eating habits recognising how life-threatening their 'sweet tooth' can be.
Today, more than 240 million people worldwide are living with diabetes. Within 20 years, the number is expected to grow to 380 million.
Each year, 3.8 million deaths are attributable to diabetes.
With such devastating effect, diabetes has now been recognised as a chronic, debilitating and costly disease by the United Nations General Assembly through a landmark resolution passed on last Dec 20.
The Resolution designated World Diabetes Day as a United Nations Day to be observed every year beginning 2007.
The theme of this year's World Diabetes Day is "Diabetes in Children and Adolescents". Diabetes is one of the most chronic diseases of childhood and can strike children at any age, including pre-school children and even toddlers.
