The growing prevalence of diabetes is being highlighted in the first United Nations observed World Diabetes Day. The observation holds particular significance for the Caribbean. Complications from diabetes are among the leading causes of death in the region.
The World Health Organization describes diabetes as a chronic, debilitating and costly disease that poses severe risks for families, countries and the entire world. If nothing is done, it warns, this figure will reach 380 million within 20 years. More than 246 million people worldwide are living with diabetes. However its prevalence has been overshadowed by publicity given to other maladies, especially HIV/AIDS.
