Dr. Manuel Vera is currently President-Elect of the South and Central America and Hispanic Caribbean Region (SACA) of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). Previously, he was a country representative member in the IDF Board of Management from 2003 to 2006. He is also Head of the INEN Diabetes Care Centre in Cuba, and an Assistant Professor in the University of Medicine Comandante Manuel Fajardo in La Habana, Cuba.
Dr. Vera has extensive experience in working with children and adolescents with diabetes as a Paediatric Endocrinologist. He has organized summer camps and other activities for children with diabetes.
Dr. Vera has completed numerous postgraduate courses in different countries as well as in Cuba. He is a member of the Editorial Committee of the magazine of the Latin American Diabetes Association (ALAD), and a member of the revision committee of Diabetes Monitor. Dr. Vera has published more than 20 articles internationally and 50 nationally, and has taken part in a vast number of activities related to research.
Dr. Vera is a member or collaborates with numerous diabetes related organizations in South America and around the world. He is an Education Ambassador for ISPAD for Latin America and the Caribbean and is President of the SACA/IDF Task Force on Children and Adolescents.
Throughout his career Dr. Vera has received numerous recognitions for his work. These include: recognition from the Joslin Diabetes Center in the United States, the Osaka Medical Association in Japan, the former Soviet Union, for his work with the children of Chernobyl, the University of Miami, and many more institutions in his native Cuba.
