Monument Challenge
WDD Monument Challenge
To mark the monumental occasion of the first United Nations observed World Diabetes Day in 2007, we initiated a challenge to light up landmark monuments in the colour of the World Diabetes Day logo and/or beam the logo onto a landmark or landmark building. The initiative exceeded all expectations and was a resounding success, with over 300 monuments and other buildings around the world lighting up in blue on 14 November as beacons of hope for the 246 million people living with diabetes. The lightings created significant local and global media opportunities for diabetes awareness on and around World diabetes Day. We are pleased to report that an estimated total of more than 1.2 billion people were reached through the media. In 2008, the monument challenge will continue. Our aim is to encourage a total of 500 iconic buildings and monuments to light up to mark World Diabetes Day 2008.
