This is a poster created by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) in partnership with the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD). The poster shows the diabetes warning signs as pictograms to make it relevant to the majority of settings. The poster is available to download in English, French, and Spanish in low and high resolution. An editable version has also been produced for you to adapt and print locally.

Campaign tip: Use the Vanelli success story to argue for the funding to run a similar awareness program in your location.

Much of the inspiration for DKA prevention programmes comes from the successes that Maurizio Vanelli has reported in Parma, Italy. Ten years ago, Vanelli demonstrated that a school-based campaign centred on recognizing early symptoms is affective in the early diagnosis of diabetes. This article, published in Diabetes Voice, tells Vanelli’s story.

Campaign tip: Use the following concept developed in Canada as the inspiration for a school-focused campaign in your geographic location.

A concept that might work in your location, this ingenious poster campaign was undertaken in Canada. Run by the Network of Ontario Pediatric Diabetes Programs, the campaign was supported by Official World Diabetes Day Partner Novo Nordisk. The focus is on the school environment and frequent urination.

Another poster concept from the Network of Ontario Pediatric Diabetes Programs with the support of Official World Diabetes Day Partner Novo Nordisk. The poster has a muti-cultural approach with a list of the diabetes warning signs along with the key message: “It’s easy to miss the warning signs of diabetes. If you see a child with any of these symptoms, make sure he or she gets tested for diabetes.”

Maurizio Vanelli’s article, published in Diabetes Voice, outlines a telephone hotline service set up at the Regional Centre for Children and Adolescents with Diabetes of the University Hospital of Parma, Italy.
