Spa4Diabetes kicks off World Diabetes Day Campaign with Red, Pink & Blue Event

Posted on 24 June 2009

In the USA, Spa4Diabetes, a friend of the World Diabetes Day 2008 campaign, has responded to the International Diabetes Federation's call on groups worldwide to raise awareness of diabetes on World Diabetes Day 2009 by teaming up with heart and breast cancer groups to organize a joint awareness event in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Teaming up with heart and breast cancer philanthropies may seem a strange way to launch a global diabetes campaign, but Candy Silvasy, founder of Spa4Diabetes is doing just that. Devising a way to excite young women about being proactive in their health & combining the forces of three health organizations geared towards women:  Red (American Heart Association), Pink (Pink Ribbon Girls) & Blue (Spa4Diabetes) the Red Pink & Blue event was born.

Candy’s PR & event planning firm, Art of the Spa is co-producing the event with CincyChic an online publication for women. Describing her dual roles in the event Candy said, “It made sense to combine my professional skills with Spa4Diabetes’ objectives, especially in light of the fact that the Blue of IDF’s campaign inspired the entire concept. And the fact that disease does not exist in isolation - I want everyone to see the interrelated nature of health.”

At Red Pink and Blue’s health conference, Candy describes her plan to ignite the fire on IDF’s World Diabetes Day programme. “Since Spa4Diabetes receives a third of the event proceeds, we will have a major presence. Our booth will feature slideshows of the lit buildings, we will distribute educational postcards about fitness with WDD reminders & encourage guests to spread the word about our global spa week to raise money and awareness.

In 2008, Spa4Diabetes launched its BlueBeauty campaign and invited spas worldwide to create blue themed spa treatments/products to offer on November 14. Over 50 spas in 5 countries participated.

For 2009, in order to raise awareness and increase fundraising potential, Candy is extending BlueBeauty for the entire week of WDD. She urges everyone to refer spas to the programme by contacting her (see details below). “With over 25,000 spas in the world it is impossible for us to reach them all. We are even seeking representatives in each country to rally their spas.”

Spa4Diabetes is a non-profit that raises awareness and money for diabetes research. Advocating the spa lifestyle as an engaging way to prevent and manage type 2 diabetes, Spa4Diabetes works with spas to implement diabetes wellness programs. Candy was motivated to start the organization after both of her parents were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
