Better Hearing Institute encourages network to join WDD 2009
The Better Hearing Institute (BHI) is joining the global effort to promote World Diabetes Day. BHI is a not-for-profit corporation that educates the American public about the neglected problem of hearing loss and what can be done about it. The organization is encouraging its network of more than 18,000 hearing health professionals across the United States to take part in World Diabetes Day 2009.
BHI aims to draw attention to the links between diabetes and impaired hearing. According to a study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, hearing loss is about twice as common in adults with diabetes compared to those who do not have the disease. Yet, screening for impaired hearing is typically not part of the regular regimen of care typically recommended for people with diabetes.
In order to support World Diabetes Day, BHI is providing an e-education toolkit to its network of hearing health professionals in the US for use with their patients and within their local communities. BHI is encouraging anyone with diabetes to take a free, quick, and confidential online hearing test at www.hearingcheck.org, to help assess whether they have impaired hearing that may require a more comprehensive hearing test.
