The theme for World Diabetes Day for 2009-2013 is Diabetes Education and Prevention. This broad and long-term theme will allow all diabetes stakeholders to take part in the campaign. The broadest possible alliance of stakeholders is required to make World Diabetes Day a global success.

The International Diabetes Federation has issued a message of support for World Cancer Day, which is marked all over the world on February 4:

As a consequence of urbanization, shifting dietary habits and reduced physical activity, the prevalence of overweight and obesity is rising at an alarming rate in both developed and developing countries. The trend is contributing to the growing burden of non-communicable diseases like diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease.
